tour de flat

You know how sometimes you see a place that looks fine when it's still inhabited by the previous tenants, then you move in and you're horrified by how crappy it really looks? Welcome to my world. Moving to a new continent was shocking enough, but this flat was just downright depressing when I first got here. I ran over to B&Q (a shop similar to Reno Depot or Home Depot, depending on where you live in Canada) and invested in a lot of paint and other things to make this place a home. Enjoy the tour of the palace. Please, no flash photography. Brochures are available in the lobby.

Mmmm...Silly Putty pink. I had already painted one wall when I realised that I had forgotten to take "before" pictures. It's hard to tell by this picture, but those curtains are white with green pinstripes. Mmmmmm.

Furniture! Painted walls! Solid colour curtains! Plants! Ahhhh much better.

A more recent shot of my living room (January, 2002).

I got this desk because it closes up like a cupboard when I'm not using it. When you come over to visit, don't open it up, though. I've crammed about 500 computer related things in that thing. If you look closely, you can spot all my electronic gadgets. I rent the telly, by the way - so don't come over here and steal it. The TV et al hides the fact that I've got a bazillion things plugged into that one wall socket. And the bundle of wires for the surround sound system. Yikes.

My dining room table. Yes, I assembled it all by myself.

This is what happens when someone has a wardrobe in their bedroom and decides to paint AROUND it instead of moving it. Lovely. Who knew that there were not one but two disgusting shades of brownish beige? Three if you count the carpet. Note the cord dangling from the ceiling- it's to turn the light on, but there's a switch by the door.

...and now the "after" picture. Spot the LaaLaa and Dogbert on the bookshelf. I am like SO intellectual.

Another "before" picture. Isn't this more entertaining than "Changing Rooms"? When I bought my bed linens, I thought "Blue and yellow will look nice - cheerful and bright". I got it home and realised "Good lord, it looks like an Ikea bag". A tad too yellow, I think.

Huge difference- the wall's now terracotta and I got cream coloured sheets. Many many many many thanks to Jen who picked out the wall colour for me! I gotta find out how I can get Jen her own decorating show on BBC2.

My little kitchen. No, I don't have two washing machines - one's a washer and the other is a dryer. I like my nice tree-lined view when I'm doing my dishes.

The other side of my wee kitchen. This is the weirdest stove I've ever encountered in my life. It has four parts: a small "ovenette" at the top (the size of a toaster over, really), the stove top, a little grill, and the oven itself is on the bottom.

I think I need to invest in a spice rack.

B&Q had a sale on border paper and I just couldn't refuse. I should have, because most of it peeled off after about a month. It was nice while it lasted.

My kitchen floor. More horrifying shades of beige. Another trip to B&Q ensued.

What a chipper floor I have now. Whee!

My bathroom shortly after I moved in. Not too exciting, but at least the tiling is brand new. Don't ask what that dried up floral thing is that's sitting on top of the toilet...it was there when I got here. I think the bathroom needs more mirrors. I only have 3.

I was on a painting streak and decided to do the bathroom as well. I think the yellow makes it a wee bit more cheerful. I've got a happy loo.

Just so you know that I do have a tub and shower as you couldn't see it in the last picture.

A moment of silence for the bike that got stolen, please. *sniff*

Finally, here's a picture that just cracks me up. I was sitting on my floor, exhausted from painting and assembling furniture. Everything was a mess- my shipment from Montreal had arrived that day and I had boxes everywhere. I looked up from where I was sitting and saw this...my Womble poking his head up above the box. Too funny.
